New Chapters

Posted in Game Design, Personal with tags , , , , on January 31, 2009 by doomcookie

After seven and half years in San Diego, I am packing up my little Zephyr Hobgoblin (and before you declare me an ideal of monastic life, a mover is following with most of my stuff) and driving up to the Bay Area to begin a new chapter of my life. I’ve taken a job with Ohai, Inc, and am thrilled to be working on a game from the ground up. (If you’re curious, here’s the first big article that has been released about Ohai!) This has been one of the bigger and more significant decisions of my life. Previous to this, it was probably accepting my first quite unexpected game design job, not knowing how deeply I would fall in love with it and end up making it my career, and previous to that, it was the decision to attend UC San Diego and move down from my rural Washington state town to “the big city” and college life.

This might have been both the easiest and the hardest of those decisions to make. On the one hand, it was the easiest, because everything fell into place so beautifully that I cannot help but feel as if it is fate, and I know that what I will be doing is exactly what I want to be doing right now. On the other hand, I had a job I loved, and have made some deep and lasting friendships that have touched me on so many levels — some within my first week of being here in San Diego, and some only recently — and making the decision to leave those people, and my position on Everquest II, was hard. I have been trying to find a word all week that means the opposite of a dilemma, because whatever that word is (I have been calling it a prolemma temporarily), it was what this decision was. I had to chose between two beautiful modes of being, and knew either one would likely make me happy. But I have never been someone who thought they could stay in one place forever, and a lot else in my life has lined up to make it easier to move on, as much as my heart had to break at leaving my friends and coworkers and the Everquest II community behind.

But, in this day and age of Facebook and Twitter and IMs, you are never that far away from the people you love. It’s not quite the same, but at least I am a mere seven hour drive, or an even shorter flight. Still, I came here seven and a half years ago a very different person, and cannot help but feel so indebted to everything I have experienced here. I came here at 18-years-old a classic person “in a shell”; afraid of the world, afraid of myself, afraid of love, afraid to talk to even the most friendly stranger. Since coming to San Diego, I have, I believe, broken out. I can now walk with my head held high, believe in myself, have and do love, say exactly what I want to say, and can joke and laugh with just about anyone I meet. I know this is all because of the people I have met and the support and love they have given me, as well as the subtle lessons I have learned from them.

From some, I have learned to love my weirdness; from others, I have learned to appreciate normality and broadened my definition of what can make me happy; from some I have learned to dance even if no one is on the dance floor with you; from others I have learned to appreciate sitting on the sidelines and watching. I now consider myself to have a very thin skin in the best possible sense. I make fast friends because it is hard not to just be filled with love & curiosity for anyone when you do your best to see what is best in them and know what makes their story in this world interesting and vibrant; and I can appreciate almost any situation I get into for the chance to learn, grow, and live. Looking at my going away party, I had friends present who were physicists and pornographers, artists and automechanics; military men and marketers. All of them have taught me things, and there is a place reserved in my heart for every one.

I’m not afraid of a new city. There’s a lot I love about San Diego, but I believe in many ways San Francisco will be a better fit, and if it’s not, it’s something new to learn about. It’s only the people I have to leave behind that make it hard. I know I’ll discover new locales — my comic store guy has given me the name of a local comic retailer who will take care of me, and my hookah lounge owner has sent me toward a whole list of new Moroccan lounges to relax in, and I relish the chance to go in blindly for the rest so I can hunt and have adventures finding new spots.

Work will be new and exciting, and I’ll really get to sink my teeth into things. I have the personality of a border collie. Don’t give me enough to do, and I will get impatient and take apart your porch board by board, so with all there is to do still for Ohai, I doubt I will ever be bored. Updates are going to be few until we are further along with things, but I am sure I will be teasing people with what you don’t know mercilessly!

Good-bye San Diego. Good-bye Everquest II. Good-bye to everyone who has shared in my journey. But hello to new things, and may we meet again.

Left 4 Dead & Launch Day

Posted in Game Design with tags , on November 17, 2008 by doomcookie

So I almost missed out entirely on the Left 4 Dead demo on Steam but finally got in last night. I played through it once alone with Zoey solo to get the hang of things, and then online with a group with Bill and had a very good time. I thought today’s comic at Ctrl Alt Del well summarized how I felt when I healed my teammate playing Zoey (dirty old man):

I slept in today to prepare for night. I am still debating whether I will actually go to bed tonight because I am part of the “early team” in at 3 AM to make sure nothing asplodes. I find that if I am going to sleep less than 4 hours, I would rather not sleep at all, and I’ll have to leave my house at 2:30. So I’ll have to be asleep by 10, and I’m not sure that I can pull that off. Either way, I am ready for it!

Is it a sign you’ve done something?

When you’ve been officially made fun of by a game review site?
“This is where the web lore, created by Morgan Lockhart, concludes. Her handle is Missdoomcookie; you decide which name sounds most made up. After months of online development, her void storyline will find resolution in the Shadow Odyssey.”
(From the following article, http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=281227&page=1).
My mom was very tickled when I told her, and said we must have named me right. I mean, he is half right I suppose, my full name is Lindsay Morgan Lockhart. I actually use my full name on our message boards and in interviews and such but people refer to me as Morgan Lockhart because I go by my middle name. I was amused.
Anyway, TSO is launching soon, and it’s very much a relief around these parts. Back to work, for me, more blogging when the expansion is up!

EQ2 Lore: By the Wings of Dragons – Part IV

The following is the final story to be released for the TSO pre-launch. It has been so much fun writing about these characters, and I’m glad to see that so many people seem to be enjoying them as well.

By the Wings of Dragons – Part IV

“He didn’t raise.”

Eylee glanced up and over at Kaltuk. The dwarf’s eyes were dark and saggy. The whole of the group stood around, watching him. The Feir’dal had explained what was going on when she reached the rest of the group, and though there had been some semblance of trying to keep at their work, most had been glancing at him so often that they finally just stopped. Most didn’t react to the news. There had been too much, too fast today and everyone was so drained that one more should-be-crushing revelation couldn’t affect them. Asharae, however, cursed audibly, and Illisia actually turned and embraced Bayle, burying her head against his chest. He stroked at her head dully and rested his chin against her head, staring forward.

Legends of Norrath: Ethernauts

So, for latest Legends of Norrath expansion, they decided to portray the story of the Ethernauts. They used Kaltuk, Illisia, Bayle, and Asharae as the new avatars, the scenarios take you through their story, and a good chunk of the other cards involve other members of the party, significant others in the story, the cloudskipper, their items (bayle’s claymore, illisia’s ‘fang of zek’ bow, etc), etc. So I’ve been working with them, sending them outlines of the story progression as I saw it, and then they worked with it to translate it to their card game. It’s been neat to watch things roll out as they released. In particular, here’s a couple of things.

Firstly, they made a really cool video to promo the game using the card art, which they gave a 3D look that actually turned out really well. If you go to the main page, scroll down to the bottom and it’s on the right.

Secondly, they have been re-releasing the stories with art. They just started a couple of weeks ago and it’s one per week so thus far they’ve released Asharae and Kaltuk. I was a little disappointed that they chose to use “The Ballad of Kaltuk Ironstein” rather than Escape from Guk, because I think that may very well be my favorite of the Ethernaut stories so far. Asharae turned out really neat though.

Also, I’ve been conducting a poll on the main boards for people’s favorite Ethernaut. Not surprisingly, Asharae is winning, but Nurgg, Illisia, and Eylee are right on her heels with only one fewer vote.

Fan Faire Update

Posted in Game Design, Gaming with tags , on July 28, 2008 by doomcookie

I’ve had my room for a bit now (I am staying on site, at the Hilton) but today I finally booked my plane ticket. I had been going back and forth for various reasons about whether I would be driving or flying but it landed on flying. I couldn’t find anything reasonably close to the price that Southworst offered me, so I am begrudgingly flying with them.

If you haven’t seen, they posted the schedule:

http://events.station.sony.com/fanfaire/schedule.vm

I’m going to speaking on the following panels:

    Friday

3pm – 4pm
EverQuest II: History and Lore
Panelists – Jeremy Gess, Roger Uzun, Noel Walling, Morgan Lockhart. Arcane knowledge or Norrathian trivia. The people who write and catalogue the lore of Norrath will be here to answer questions and talk about the History and Lore of EQII. Pavilion 1.

5pm – 6pm
EverQuest II: Anything Goes
Panelists – Joshua Kriegshauser, Bruce Ferguson, Greg Spence, Noel Walling, Jeremy Gess, Roger Uzun, Emily Taylor, Morgan Lockhart, Chris Junior, Chris Kozak, Jason Woerner, Jennifer Gerull, Bill Yeatts. Anything you didn’t get to ask during the day is up for discussion in this “Anything Goes” panel. Or you can just see what happens when you put a bunch of EQII devs in one room! This panel is available both Friday and Saturday. Pavilion 1.

    Saturday

2pm – 3pm
EverQuest II: Preview the upcoming expansion.
Details to be announced. Pavilion 1

5pm – 6pm
EverQuest II: Anything Goes

So I suppose Friday I will mostly be wandering. I’ll probably sit in on a few of the other EQ2 panels for moral support and maybe see what my old pals at Vanguard are up to.

Quest Preferences

Posted in Game Design on June 19, 2008 by doomcookie

I started a topic to gather data from our player community about what sort of quests they actually like playing. As I anticipated, for the most part, people have said they like variety, but there has been some good discussion so far. I was also mostly interested to see if the perception that people really only want kill quests is true, as if that response were winning behind “variety”, I might up the amount of kill quests I put in. Similarly, there are certain types of quests I strongly prefer and like to implement that I am not sure if players actually enjoy doing, and so if those sort of quests got at least some votes, I’d feel justified in continuing to put them in. For example, “story/diplomatic quests”. Quests, in short, that mostly involve talking to NPCs and don’t involve killing. I am pleased to see that’s gotten a decent number of votes (far more than kill quests, though there are not enough responses yet to make a good case either way).

Anyway, if you want to chime in, the discussion is happening below.
